A Brief History of CHF

The California Housing Foundation is a not-for-profit charitable foundation founded in 1998 by a small group of dedicated individuals who recognized the need to support the Inland Regional Center’s (IRC) mission to normalize the lives of people with developmental disabilities. The Foundation was the idea of Verlin Wooley, who was the IRC Executive Director at the time.

In 2000 with the help of IRC’s Executive Director, Mary Lynn Clark, CHF established the Independent Living Grant Program. The program is designed to assist consumers with one-time purchases related to moving out on their own for the first time. Since the program began, CHF has awarded nearly $950,000 to consumers transitioning to independent living situations.

CHF built four homes in the Palm Desert area in 2001. These homes served as a pilot project for the construction of houses created by renowned home designer, George Braddock to meet regional center consumers’ unique needs. Today, these four homes provide the highest quality service and comfort to sixteen residents.

The success of the Palm Desert homes paved the way for the development of one of CHF’s most important objectives, to provide a permanent stock of homes for developmentally disabled persons.

Today, CHF’s twenty-three Southern California houses are home to almost 90 individuals with developmental disabilities. CHF plans to continue to build and purchase additional homes for IRC consumers.
